Take in the beautiful Surrey scenery by boating along the River Wey Navigation. At the main road turn right. After St Catherines Lock, the route stays open air, with fields to the side. Designed and developed with PenciDesign. Bats are by far the most numerous canal mammals. Commercial barges ceased in 1983. It became known as the Wey Navigation. The Wey was one of the first British rivers to be made navigable, and opened to barge traffic in 1653. Good moderate-short walk past some lovely farm land and rivers. The terrain was excellent and you dont have to worry about navigating; just follow the river! But if thats your vibe, then Im all for it. Walk along the river to St Catherine's Lock The next section of the walk along the River Wey is easy, along a wide dirt path. Id get board. The walk has a few gentle climbs and descents throughout. It runs 15 miles from Guildford to the Thames at Weybridge. The path is relatively flat and good for all ages and fitness levels. The walk from Guildford to Godalming along the River Wey is nice and simple. 150 metres later, turn left into Halfway Lane (signed as a public bridleway). Just beyond an old brick pillbox, pass through the wide wooden gate and keep directly ahead on the concrete drive with horse paddocks still immediately on your left. This is a great trail for kids and dogs are allowed if on a lease. For less strenuous outings, there are plenty of serene waterside walks with beautiful meadows and the company of canal boats chugging along. Now, there is a way to continue the walk along the river, kind of. The River Wey Navigation opened in 1653. The walk I recommend begins in West Byfleet and follows a path south towards Guildford. Go straight on, crossing over the side road Westbrook Road, and then take the next left, Borough Road, passing the Church of St Peter and St Paul on your right. This walk takes you along the River Arun the whole way to Arundel, where you will get a glimpse of the impressive Arundel Castle. 2) Staying on the Wey Navigation path, look out on your right for a disused pillbox, or gunnery point, for the Home Guard.
